A number of theories exist about the meaning and origin of the name, "Kilimanjaro." One theory is that the name is a mix of the Swahili word Kilima, meaning "mountain," and the KiChagga word Njaro, loosely translated as "whiteness." Another is that Kilimanjaro is the European pronunciation of a KiChagga phrase meaning "we failed to climb it."
Our next climber, Stephanie Pitfield, isn't daunted by this name. Steph is an Outward Bound alumna, outdoor enthusiast who loves to travel and explore! She is currently living in London UK, working as a Management Consultant for EY. Steph loves sports, specifically skiing and running and any type of adventure – especially if it involves eating exotic food! She is an avid traveller and has taken up a recent challenge, combining her passion for running and travel by completing international marathons – Amsterdam in October and Paris & London coming up in the Spring! Steph climbed the Atlas Mountains in Africa with her mom, a few years ago, and is excited for a higher climb and greater challenge – this time supported by 3 members of her family - Ali, Harty and Rob!
